Christian Laborie 'Piattalini' model.  Handmade by one of the world's premier makers.  Beautiful wood, especially the figure in the top spruce.  Deep ribs and a steep cutaway toward the neck block.  This bass has been a favorite with players visiting the shop, drawing many compliments about its very refined, singing tone and outstanding quick response.  It is extremely predictable and easy to play in tune with a 41 1/2"string lenth.  Its neck geometry makes for ease of access to thumb position.  An incomparable solo bass, and with the power and depth to be a good orchestra bass as well.  $34,000

Extrordinary, great-sounding, versatile bass from the Mittenwald region, Germany, ca. 1880.  Dark red-brown, original tailpiece,  just had a top-off restoration at Robertson's including brand-new bridge.  Medium sized 3/4 with a sound that's bigger than its size!  Currently set up with Spirocore Mittel - surprisingly, the bass does not sound excessively bright, due to its strong low end. $13,900.

A very pretty 'Amati' model French bass by Joel Mentec, 1983.  Beautifully flamed back and ribs of French maple.  Reduced rib depth contributes to this bass' strong projection and lighting-fast response.  Original compensated tailpiece from the maker.  This bass was made for and owned by Gary Karr, and subsequently donated to the ISB, and was played in the first-prize-winning performance of an ISB solo competition, and also the grand-prize winning performance of the ASTA solo competition.  Just meticulously adjusted, with varnish touchup and a brand-new bridge.  Take this unique opportunity to acquire a fine instrument with extraordinary provenance.  $14,900

Horst Grunert Quenoil model, 1986.  This bass features nicely flamed wood and is in excellent condition.  Though the Quenoil pattern bass is often used for solo playing, this one has slightly increased rib depth in the lower bout and puts out ample low end, making it suitable for orchestral playing as well.  Power and long sustain make it versatile for jazz. $28,000
